Merrell Ontario Speed Hiking Shoe - Men's

First off, they do look great, and I'm happy to have them. The leather and metal D-rings give the upper the look of a premium boot while the cushioning system keeps these light and comfy. However, sizing has been a challenge for me. I started with my true size and felt that they were way too wide and overall felt loose on my foot. They felt relatively comfortable and the length felt correct, but I couldn't get the right amount of lockdown. I exchanged for a half size down, and while the width is improved, the length is now shorter than I would prefer. I think I would recommend going true to size on these and wearing extra thick socks or changing to a thicker insole. I'm not unhappy with mine at 0.5 down, but I think some volume adjustments need to be made for most wearers.

Great comfortable and stylish shoes. Just a bit on the wider side so have to wear thick socks, nothing too major. Absolutely Fantastic overall.

I have a narrow heel / combination last and heel of shoe slipped a lot. A beautiful shoe otherwise !

Has potential but needs work. Great construction and look. I have solidly medium volume (instep) and medium width feet. In a size 11, the tip of my big toe is correctly positioned at ~1/2 inch from the front of the shoe. However, I have to wrench the laces down to keep my heel from coming halfway out of the shoe, so I get soreness across the top of my foot, and even then my heel still slides a bit. This causes one of the very thin (~2 mm) stock insoles to slide up the heel until it's sticking out of the back of the shoe! Disappointing. I put in some cushier insoles and added a leather pad under the tongue to take up space and this has helped a lot, but still the heel cup is still insecure and slides around. I've tried adding some leather to the padded heel collar and am letting the cement cure so we'll see if that helps. I got these shoes on super-sale so I can't be too mad but I would definitely return if they were not final sale. With regards to another comment about the lacing system being slippery, this is with all D-ring lace loops and not a fault of the construction. It comes from the factory laced "inside-out" as shoes usually do. If you the D-rings to "bite" into the laces and lock them in place, you need to re-lace them "outside-in". Just search online and you'll find an explanation. But the D-ring loops are as solid as any I've seen. MERRELL!! I've seen complaints of high-volume fit in reviews of some other shoes too. Please make your shoes work for medium-low volume feet. Laces can accommodate a high-instep foot in a medium-volume shoe, but not the other way around. I have loved many of your shoes. The Trail Glove 6 is the best everyday shoe I've ever owned (once broken in and yes it squeezed the top of my foot for a while like others have complained) and is durable in a way that seems to violate the laws of physics. I now wear them as workshop slippers without laces and have many times left the house forgetting to change my shoes because I forget that I'm wearing shoes at all. So whatever you did with those, please do it again in your other shoes and you can have all my money.
