How To Waterproof Leather
Ugh, wet feet are the worst. And ruined leather definitely comes in at a close second.
Step 1: Prep
Make sure to protect your work area. Lay out newspaper or an old cloth and read all instructions that come with the product. Using a boot brush, scrub off all dirt and residue from your leather boots or shoes.
Step 2: Spray
Using a silicone spray, lightly spray boots. (Test an inconspicuous area first!) Hold the can the suggested distance (usually 8-12 inches) from the boots and spray a steady and light spray of the product.
Step 3: Wait
Let dry for 20ish minutes. Don’t try to rush it with a hairdryer or something; the heat can dry your leather too quickly, which can cause hardening and cracking.
Step 4: Spray Again
Spray boots with a second light coat and let dry thoroughly. You’ll need to reapply the spray every month or so—or if you’ve been stomping around in a ton of water.
