How Do I Measure My Calf Width?

Measuring your calf is arguably the most important part of finding the right boot. Because yes, boots will not magically shape to your leg. This small step will help ensure your boots feel like a warm hug, not a choke hold. So, let’s measure that calf, shall we? Follow the steps in the boot sizing chart below to see if you’re looking for boots in standard calf, wide calf, or extra-wide calf fit.

STEP 1: Understand what you’re measuring. The boot opening is the very top of the boot and should be measured inside the boot. The shaft circumference is measured on the outside at the fullest part of the boot. The fullest part of your calf should be smaller than both the boot opening and shaft circumference for an ideal fit.
Step 2: Wrap a flexible tape measure around the fullest part of your calf. No flexible tape measure? No problem. Use a string, then measure the length of the string against a ruler.
Step 3: Compare your measurements with those listed in the features section of the product description at dsw.com. If the fullest part of your calf measures 15.5” or more, we recommend trying a wide-calf boot. (Note: Measurements may vary slightly based on boot size.)
Step 4: Consider the details: Lacing or a little stretch may work best for a wider calf, while adjustable straps or boots labeled “slim fit” may be magic for a narrow calf.

Calf Circumference

Pro tip: Relax your calf muscles.

SHAFT HEIGHT: Measure from the middle arch on the bottom of the foot (not including the heel) to the top of the boot. BOOT OPENING: Measure inside at the very top of the boot. SHAFT CIRCUMFERENCE: Measure the fullest part of the boot (& the fullest part of your calf).

Don’t Forget to Measure for Shaft Height

This final step is that cherry on top to ensure your new boot is the best height for your body type and personal style.

  • Measure from the floor up to where you want the boot to hit (ankle, mid-calf, knee, or thigh).

Pro Tip: Measure over the socks you’ll typically wear with boots. If you typically wear thick socks, you will need to factor in some extra space for them.

Types of Women's Boots by Height

The best thing about boots is that there is literally an option for any look, any time of year. Boot size is key for fit and comfort, but when it comes to style…it’s all about the height. Here’s how boots break down by shaft height so you can pick your vibe.

Ankle Boots

Ankle boots and booties are boots with a shaft of 9” or less. Short boots, sock boots, Chelsea boots, chukka boots, and little black boots all fall into this category. Dressed up or down, booties are a closet staple for any boot lover.

Mid-Calf Boots

Mid-calf boots are your classic UGG boots, cowboy boots, HUNTER rain boots, and your favorite combat boots. This versatile boot rises to the middle of the calf muscle, giving you more coverage than an ankle boot.

Knee-High & Riding Boots

Knee-high boots are easy to spot with their height reaching just below or right at the knee. These boots are your go-to for fun occasions, polished events, and pretty much anytime you want to make a statement. With their equestrian styling and slim fit, riding boots fall into this category. And while classic riding boots are typically brown or black, DSW stores knee-high boots in colors galore.

Over-the-Knee Boots

Not a tall boot, not a knee-high boot, but a boot with a 19”–22 ¾” shaft that rests just above your knee? That’s called an OTK or over-the-knee boot. This dramatic and eye-catching boot always makes a statement and looks great with a dress or skinny jeans.

Wide-Calf Boots

A wide-calf boot begins at 16” in circumference while the foot size remains the same. We carry most of your faves in wide calf, from mid-calf boots to over-the-knee boots.

Wide-Width Boots

Wide-width boots have a little extra room around the foot and toe box with about a quarter of an inch more than the standard size. We have a sooo many wide-width options for you to choose from, and they are super cute if we do say so ourselves.

Narrow-Calf Boots

Narrow-calf boots are knee-high or tall boots designed with a smaller calf circumference to avoid any gapping. These boots should contour to the leg and create a more tailored look perfect for all of your favorite ’fits. DSW carries narrow-calf boots from your favorite brands including Naturalizer, Vince Camuto, and Vintage Fountry.
